Ethiopia, Addis Ababa: Trolleybuses to shortly start service in metropolis

ENA (Addis Ababa, Jan 10 2008) - Rus Afro Trolleybus, a private limited company, said two trolley busses it has imported at a cost of over five million birr are to shortly start trial services in Addis Ababa.

Company owner and general manager, Eng. Getachew Eshetu told ENA.
Each of the 130-seat buses, imported duty-free, is made with consideration of people with disabilities.
The buses are to start their first service along Georogis-Addisu Gebeya route, from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm in three shifts.
The buses would go operational as soon as the necessary electric device installation is completed and would provide free transportation services for a period of one week.
The company envisages expanding the use of trolleybuses in Ethiopia and Africa at large through the Debremarkos assembling factory.
The company is a joint venture with 70 percent of the share held by Ethiopian businessman and 30 percent by Russians.

Rus-Afro Trolley Bus plc on Friday introduced the first two trolley electric driven buses assembled here with the support from Russian Trolley Bus Company to enable the company to produce the buses locally.
The sample buses were introduced in a ceremony at the Maskal Square The Company will start production pending completion of necessary infrastructure.
Rus-Afro Trolley Owner and Director Engineer Getachew Eshetu said his Company plans to produce 500 buses a year when it starts to produce with full capacity there by creating job opportunities 5000 workers.
He said the company was set to provide transport service to and from the major towns of the country like Nazareth, Mekele, Bahir Dar, and Awassa with some 50 buses to be assembled in the first production phase.
"For the time being we have ordered 50 buses, which will be readily available for service.
The company which is based in Debremarkos city (Amhara Regional State) has a total capital of 100 million birr and has every access of loans from local banks if needed though the capital is enough," the Director said.
Getachew said the demand for the bus was high given the shortage of transport service providers in the country.
He said Addis Ababa alone, needed around 1200 buses to curb transport problem in the city.
Alemayehu Tegegn, Minister of Mines and Energy who attended the launch pointed out the huge potential for utilizing the huge hydro-electric resources in the country which, he said is estimated to be 45,000 MW.
"Sharing this huge power for transport activity will not only ease transport problem in the country, but will also help enhance the economy," he said.
The bus, each costing around 200, 000 birr to the company can carry about 200-300 people at a time and are expected to be by far cheaper than fuel driven buses by 30-40 % , according to Engineer Getachew.
Trolley Buses are have tires like any other car using electric energy, avoids pollution caused from fuel burning, are free of noise pollution and need little maintenance services that ensures continuity of service with out interruption.
The company is further working on producing a different rail way buses, the director noted.
